When restorative practices are a part of the common
experience of a society, it can relieve the stress on the judicial
and law enforcement systems.
Considerably
fewer and less serious additional crimes are committed by juvenile
offenders in several victim offender mediation programs
in the U.S., when compared to similar offenders who did not participate
in mediation (Neimeyer & Schichor, 1995; Nugent & Paddock,
1995; Umbreit & Coats, 1993).
Additionally
the statistics show that 81% of offenders who met with their
victim were far more likely to successfully complete
their restitution obligations than similar offenders who did
not participate in mediation, which was 58% (Umbreit, 1994).
